Pia - Glanzberg Pia at Staubach

Writing about Pia is very difficult, what ever we write will not do justice to this very special girl, when we brought Pia home as an 8 week old puppy she was gorgeous, the usual puppy very happy and loved all our dogs. When she was over one year old we noticed she appeared to be having trouble with one of her eys weeping, our vet examined her and referred her to an eye specialist, the out come was her eye was removed and she only had sight in one eye. This was not a handicap to Pia, she continued life to the full, playing with our other dogs and enjoying her walks, a few months later we noticed her remaining eye was swollen. We immediatly went to the specialist, after examining her we were devastated, we were given three options for Pia: 1. Remove the eye and close it - 2. Remove the eye and replace with false or 3. Put her to sleep.

We settled on option 2 and Pia is still with us and nothing bothers her, with her sense of smell, hearing and touch being improved to compensate for her loss of sight. We even take her with us when we go to our friend's Sonja and Reg who bred her, she wonders around their house with their dogs and around their large garden with no problems. When we have visitors Pia loves all the attention from them, when they realise she is totally blind they cannot believe how well she manages, Pia lives her life to the full with our dogs, we would never have considered option 3 at all. Our dogs are with us for ever, we would never rehome one of our dogs or have it put to sleep. The eye specialist said the problems were not inherited - just probably two unfortunate accidents while she was still a very young puppy playing with her littermates, he said he could not believe how well Pia was, her character and temperament has not changed in any way after all she had been through.
