Hip & Elbow Scores

This page contains the names, dates of birth and the hip and elbow results of any Staubach bred puppies that have been x-rayed and assessed. Unfortunatly here in the UK it is not compulsary to have all dogs x-rayed. However all our own dogs have had their hips and elbows x-rayed and assessed and we suggest to all new puppy owners they do the same.

The BVA/KC (British Veterinary Association & UK Kennel Club) - provide a testing scheme for the hips (HD) and elbows (ED) of our breed, dogs cannot be x-rayed for the scheme before they are 12 months old. X-ray plates are assessed by BVA scrutineers with the lowest score being the best. When assessing the hips there are nine parts that are scored, each part is scored from 0 to 6, the scores for each hip could be as high as 53 each.

When having your dogs tested you should be looking for the lowest scores possible, the Bernese mean average for hips is a total of 15, as you will see from our results each hip, left and right is scored and both are added together to give a total score.

The assessement of the elbows is different, each elbow is scored from 0 to 3, the total score is that of the highest elbow, they are not added together like the hip scores, again the lower the score the better. If for example you have a scores of 0/0 then the elbows would be 0, if the score was 1/0 it would be 1, if it was 2/1 it would be 2 and if it was 2/3 it would be 3. Some of our dogs have had their x-rays assessed by the OFA in America, (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) their results are also shown here, where there is no elbow result the owner did not have them x-rayed. Unlike the BVA/KC scheme in the UK the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) will allow you to have Preliminary x-rays and assessment at a minimum age of 12 months. Then after the age of two years they allow new x-rays to be submitted of the dogs hips and elbows and then give their final assessment. When two years old the dogs are then given a unique official OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) registration number.
